The successful candidate will:

  • Deliver quality services to improve health of the population in Nelson - Blenheim region.
  • Participate in the ENT roster 1:5 on-call
  • Be part of the busy contemporary ENT services and provide care and treatment for ORL patients with a wide range of ORL conditions.
  • Supervise and participate in teaching of junior medical workforce.

This position is based in Nelson Hospital, however, it requires a district-wide cover across both Nelson and Wairau hospital sites when the service needs require.

  • Be eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate with a vocational scope of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

About the role

Specialist Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon working with the ENT team, providing specialist care to patients, training of Surgical Education and Training (SET) trainees and junior doctors as well as participation in the after-hours roster.

Requirements for the role

  • Evidence of vaccination, or be able to be vaccinated against - Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Pertussis, Hepatitis B and COVID-19.

Purpose and scope:

Specialty Coordinators are pro-bono advisory positions supporting the RACS Global Health Team.  Specialty Coordinators provide technical and clinical support for Global Health programs and activities related to a particular speciality.

RACS Global Health is aiming to appoint two Specialty Coordinators for each speciality.  This Call for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) seeks to appoint a second Speciality Coordinator for ENT.  Having two Specialty Coordinators appointed assists with sharing the role and responsibilities.

All Global Health personnel, including Specialty Coordinators, are required to meet RACS’ minimum compliance standards. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Annual completion of a Federal Police Check
  • Annual clearance of a Counter Terrorism Check 
  • Achieving a 100% grade pass on RACS Global Health’s suite of e-learning modules
  • Reading and signing RACS Global Health’s suite of policies, including the Child Safeguarding Policy, Prevention of Sexual Abuse and Harassment Policy, Ethical Images and Stories Policy and the RACS Code of Conduct
Selection Criteria:
  • Be a qualified professional and be registered with the relevant peak body to practice in Australia or New Zealand
  • Demonstrate a commitment to assisting RACS Global Health partners (Ministries of Health and clinical teams) to strengthen their health systems, develop their health workforce and meet the health needs of the population
  • Have a sound understanding of the health conditions, facilities and treatment options for medical conditions encountered in resource-poor environments
  • Have an understanding of the international aid and development sector
  • Have experience of working as a visiting surgical or medical specialist in the Asia/Pacific region (preferred)

The department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery provides adult and paediatric services to South Tasmania for primary and secondary care, and it is the tertiary referral Department for Tasmania. The unit is currently staffed with 3 consultants, 1 CMO, 1 unaccredited registrar and 1 resident. Department is treating both children and adults for diseases of the ear, nose and throat.
