The Role - Where you fit it

We are looking for a full-time, permanent position as an Otolaryngologist to join the Christchurch team in Canterbury. We are considering both full-time and part-time applications and fixed-term positions so please provide dates you would be available.

The Otolaryngology Department at Christchurch Hospital provides a complete range of secondary and tertiary services to Canterbury and other areas in South Island, with a secondary referral population base of 550,000, tertiary referral population base of one million. Services are provided on an inpatient, day patient and outpatient basis and are integrated with the Audiology Department.

Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

Qualifications required:

  • Specialist registration in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery
  • Current Annual Medical Practising Certificate
  • Post Graduate training in Head and Neck surgery would be desirable

Professional memberships required:

  • Medical indemnity insurance

Experience required:

  • Expertise in the field of general Otolaryngology
  • Post Fellowship training/experience for a tertiary teaching centre, including an appropriate subspecialty interest. Currently an interest in Paediatric, Head and Neck and Rhinology surgery desirable
  • An ability to undertake and organise undergraduate Otolaryngology teaching would also be desirable

The Job

About Otolaryngology Department

The department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery provides adult and paediatric services to South Tasmania for primary and secondary care, and it is the tertiary referral Otolaryngology Department for Tasmania.

The unit is currently staffed by 3 Visiting Medical Officers (VMO) FRACS consultants, 1 Clinical Medical Officer, 2 Unaccredited Registrars and 1 Resident. The department was accredited by RACS to employ one Accredited Registrar from 2024.

The Department consultants and the Junior staff are involved in running general outpatient clinic and specialised clinics (Head and Neck, Laryngology, Congenital hearing loss) and theatre sessions. It is very well supported by an Audiology department and Speech Pathology Department.

We provide an ongoing on call roster and we expect the ENT Surgeons joining us in the future to share this roster with other consultants.

We are working closely with our colleagues from other department such as Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic surgery, Respiratory and Paediatric Department and Department of Emergency and others, when combined care is required for complex cases.

The Department is involved in research and in teaching medical students from University of Tasmania, our junior staff and in training doctors from other specialities and nurses.

Our Outpatient clinics and Theatre facilities are supported by qualified and dedicated administrative staff and high standard equipment.

The role:

Provide quality specialist and sub-specialty medical services to the Launceston General Hospital (LGH) within the limits of specified clinical privileges.

NSW Rural Doctors Network (RDN) in partnership with Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation is inviting expressions of interest for an ENT who will provide a bulk-billed ENT clinic for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

This outreach service would involve the following:

  • One day per month delivering a bulk-billed ENT clinic at Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation
  • Collaborating with other medical practitioners, allied health practitioners and services
  • This clinic would ideally suit a Sydney-based ENT.

Service summary

  • The service is funded under the Healthy Ears, Better Hearing, Better Listening (HEBHBL) Program that gives priority access to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 0-21 focusing on ear and hearing related conditions.
  • Provide patient consultations and upskilling of local health professionals.
  • Referrals into the service will come from Tharawal GPs and other local GPs.
  • Referrals for surgery will go into South Western Sydney LHD, admitting rights will be required
  • There are visiting audiology and speech therapy services into the community to support the ENT consultation service.
  • Program funds are available to cover the cost of transportation and travel time for the health professionals to get to the clinic as well as funding for upskilling of local staff.

The main objectives of the Outreach ENT are to:

  • Improve access to ear and hearing health up services for Aboriginal children and youth
  • Improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and youth in South Western Sydney NSW
  • Provide early detection, treatment and management of otitis media and other ear and hearing conditions upon referral by the primary care physician
  • Reduce the risk of children developing chronic ear and hearing problems which can result in poor health, development and educational outcomes through family education and early intervention
  • Provide treatment and management for other ear, nose and throat issues including but not limited to enlarged and/or inflamed tonsils, sleeping issues, enlarged adenoids, tongue tie, feeding issues, voice issues, allergies, nasal polyps and ear hygiene.

Primary objective

Provide a specialist Ear, Nose and Throat service to include the care of both inpatient and ambulatory patients within the Ear, Nose and Throat Department of Royal Darwin Hospital, regional hospitals and remote communities. Selection criteria

  1. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent if an International Medical Graduate (IMG). For those that do not have FRACS, then a successful assessment by the college will be required.
  2. Certificate of completion of higher surgical training in ENT if an IMG from their home country.
  3. Training, experience and expertise in providing specialist ENT services. A demonstrated special interest in Otology would be desirable for one of the positions.
  4. A period of higher surgical training (Fellowship) in Australia is desirable from IMG applicants.
  5. Demonstrated interpersonal, oral and written communication skills at all levels, to interact positively in a cross-cultural work environment, as a team member.
  6. An interest in and a commitment to improving Indigenous health.

The department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery provides adult and paediatric services to South Tasmania for primary and secondary care, and it is the tertiary referral Department for Tasmania. Visiting Medical Officer (VMO)  - Otolaryngology (ENT) Paediatrics Surgery
(Airds, NSW)


NSW Rural Doctors Network (RDN) in partnership with Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation is inviting expressions of interest for an ENT who will provide a bulk-billed ENT clinic for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

This outreach service would involve the following:

  • One day per month delivering a bulk-billed ENT clinic at Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation
  • Collaborating with other medical practitioners, allied health practitioners and services
  • This clinic would ideally suit a Sydney-based ENT.

Service summary

  • The service is funded under the Healthy Ears, Better Hearing, Better Listening (HEBHBL) Program that gives priority access to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 0-21 focusing on ear and hearing related conditions.
  • Provide patient consultations and upskilling of local health professionals.
  • Referrals into the service will come from Tharawal GPs and other local GPs.
  • Referrals for surgery will go into South Western Sydney LHD, admitting rights will be required
  • There are visiting audiology and speech therapy services into the community to support the ENT consultation service.
  • Program funds are available to cover the cost of transportation and travel time for the health professionals to get to the clinic as well as funding for upskilling of local staff.

The main objectives of the Outreach ENT are to:

  • Improve access to ear and hearing health up services for Aboriginal children and youth
  • Improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and youth in South Western Sydney NSW
  • Provide early detection, treatment and management of otitis media and other ear and hearing conditions upon referral by the primary care physician
  • Reduce the risk of children developing chronic ear and hearing problems which can result in poor health, development and educational outcomes through family education and early intervention
  • Provide treatment and management for other ear, nose and throat issues including but not limited to enlarged and/or inflamed tonsils, sleeping issues, enlarged adenoids, tongue tie, feeding issues, voice issues, allergies, nasal polyps and ear hygiene.
