The Role - Where you fit it

We are looking for a full-time, six month (negotiable) contract consultant as an Otolaryngologist to join the Christchurch team in Canterbury. The contract will start in ASAP through to June 2024.

The Otolaryngology Department at Christchurch Hospital provides a complete range of secondary and tertiary services to Canterbury and other areas in South Island, with a secondary referral population base of 550,000,tertiary referral population base of one million. Services are provided on an inpatient, day patient and outpatient basis and are integrated with the Audiology Department.

Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

Qualifications required:

  • Specialist registration in Otolaryngology

  • Eligible for Provisional Specialist registration and current Annual Medical Practising Certificate

Professional memberships required:

  • Medical indemnity insurance

Experience required:

  • Expertise in the field of general Otolaryngology

  • Post Fellowship training/experience for a tertiary teaching centre, including an appropriate subspecialty interest. Currently an interest in Paediatric, Head and Neck and Rhinology surgery desirable

  • An ability to undertake and organise undergraduate Otolaryngology teaching would also be desirable

Other skills required:

  • Be able to work under pressure and prioritise clinical workload.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • A team approach to work in an environment that includes many disciplines; and a collaborative working relationship with management

We are looking for a General Otolaryngologists to cover sabbatical leave. 

The successful applicants will be a highly motivated team player and will enjoy a very collegial relationship. The role is based at Wellington Regional Hospital, however the successful candidate will be expected to work across the greater Wellington region in line with a current change to establish a sub-regional ENT service.

The position will involve a range of acute and elective general ORL surgery however application from a post-fellow or experienced surgeon with a sub-specialty area of interest, particularly in Otology, would be welcomed.

Some undergraduate teaching is expected as well as supervision and teaching of registrars in the otolaryngology training rotation.

Mō tō mātou rōpū – About our team

The department currently consists of ten general and subspecialist surgeons who provide a wide range of service to the greater Wellington region and tertiary level care for the wider region. Current recruitment to the sub-regional service will see the team increase to 11 surgeons.

These include general otolaryngology, rhinology and anterior skull base surgery, otology, lateral skull base and acoustic neuroma surgery, cochlear implantation, paediatric otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. We work in close collaboration with oncology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, paediatric and neurosurgery services.

  • Vocationally registered in Otolaryngology with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) 
  • FRACS or equivalent to be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ

As an ENT specialist you will be delivering outpatient services from new premises located in the buzz of Ahuriri, Napier, a short walk from the marina with its restaurants and shopping. It is 20 minutes by car from the Hastings hospitals. The majority of our elective surgery is performed in Kaweka Hospital, a brand-new, purpose-built surgical centre next to the public hospital.

It is anticipated that, once settled you may also want to work in the private sector in a part time capacity alongside the current ENT specialists.

The Job

Primary objective

Provide a specialist Ear, Nose and Throat service to include the care of both inpatient and ambulatory patients within the Ear, Nose and Throat Department of Royal Darwin Hospital, regional hospitals and remote communities. The position is for General ENT adult and paediatric disease management with an emphasis on Otology services to our local communities.   1. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent if an International Medical Graduate (IMG). For those that do not have FRACS, then a successful assessment by the college will be required.
  2. Certificate of completion of higher surgical training in ENT if an IMG from their home country.
  3. Training, experience and expertise in providing specialist ENT services. A demonstrated special interest in Otology would be desirable for one of the positions.
  4. A period of higher surgical training (Fellowship) in Australia is desirable from IMG applicants.
  5. Demonstrated interpersonal, oral and written communication skills at all levels, to interact positively in a cross-cultural work environment, as a team member.
  6. An interest in and a commitment to improving Indigenous health.
  7. Evidence of commitment to; continuing education, teaching, research and quality assurance activities.
  8. An ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures.

About Otolaryngology Department

The department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery provides adult and paediatric services to South Tasmania for primary and secondary care, and it is the tertiary referral Department for Tasmania. The unit is currently staffed with 3 consultants, 1 CMO, 1 unaccredited registrar and 1 resident. Department is treating both children and adults for diseases of the ear, nose and throat.

Our Outpatient clinics and Theatre facilities are supported by qualified and dedicated administrative staff and there is access to high standard equipment.

Salary

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.
