Any practising Otolaryngology Head and Neck (OHN) surgeon in Australia who has attained Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), or an equivalent qualification recognised by RACS and ASOHNS can apply for Full membership.
A Full Member is eligible for all entitlements of membership, including voting rights and becoming an office-holder on the Federal Council and any of the sub-entities (i.e. state branches, Council sub-committees and Annual Scientific Meetings organising committees).
A Full Member pays the full annual subscription fee for the duration of membership and a one-off Joining Levy upon joining ASOHNS.
Any Full Member who has been in continuous full financial membership for 35 years or is fully retired from clinical practice is eligible for Senior Membership.
Full Members who have completed 35 years’ continuous financial membership of ASOHNS are sent a document to sign indicating their wish to become Senior Members.
Alternatively, Full Members who have retired from clinical practice and wish to become Senior Members must write to the Federal Secretary advising their retirement.
Names of eligible Senior Members are submitted to the Federal Executive for approval.
Senior Members are eligible to vote and become office-holders on the Federal Council and in any of the sub-entities (i.e. state sections, Council sub-committees and Annual Scientific Meeting organising committees).
The annual subscription fee is 10% of the Full Member annual subscription fee.
An Associate Member is a medical practitioner active in the field of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery but who is ineligible for Full Membership or temporarily based overseas.
Application for Associate Membership must be made by completing the relevant Associate Membership Application form and including names and signatures of a Proposer and Seconder, both of whom must be current financial Full, Senior or Life Member of the Society. The application is forwarded to the relevant State Section Executive for initial approval and then the Federal Executive for final approval.
Associate Members pay a reduced subscription fee as determined by the ASOHNS Council. The subscription fee may vary from Associate Member to Associate Member, depending on the level of services to be provided to them.
Currently, Associate Member sub-categories include:
- Associate Member
An existing Associate Members approved before 2009.
Receives all entitlements similar to Full Members but is ineglible to vote.
The annual subscription fee is 75% of the Full Member fee.
- Associate Member - Overseas
A medical practitioner who is active in the field of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgeon practising outside Australia, who has attained FRACS and has been approved for Full Membership or has connections in Australia.
(Previously within the “Corresponding” membership category, which is now defunct).
An OHN surgeon practising overseas who has connections in Australia may apply for Associate Member - Overseas membership status.
A Full Member who is working overseas and/or undertaking an overseas fellowship may apply to change to Associate Member - Oversease status until returning to Australia and reverting to Full Membership status.
Receives all entitlements of Full Membership but is ineligible to vote.
The annual subscrption fee is 50% of the Full Member fee (with no GST incurred).
- Associate Member - IMG
An International Medical Graduate in OHNS who is undertaking approved advanced training or supervision with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) in OHNS with the intention of practising in the specialty of OHNS in Australia may apply for Associate Member - IMG status.
(Previously within the “Provisional” membership category, which is now defunct).
Receives similar entitlements to Full Members but does not have acess to the Members Section of the website (but can access the password-protected area of the Trainees section), and iis ineligible to vote.
The annual subscription fee is 50% of the Full Member fee (including GST).
Once FRACS is attained, the Associate Member - IMG status will cease at the end of the relevant calendar year. Application for Full Membership may be made, if desired.
A Full Member considered by the Federal Council to have given outstanding service to the Society may be elected to Life Membership.
Life Members are eligible to vote and become office-holders on the Federal Council and in any of the sub-entities (i.e. state sections, Council sub-committees and Annual Scientific Meeting organising committees).
Life Members do not pay annual subscription fees or any levies.
A person deemed by the Federal Council to have made a significant contribution to the OHNS specialty may be elected as an Honorary Member.
Honorary Members are ineligible to exercise a vote.
Honorary Members do not pay annual subscription fees or any levies.
