The Historical Section of ASOHNS was established in 2015, and follows in the footsteps of both the British Society for the History of ENT and the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) Historical Society. We are a member of the International Society for the History of ENT.
At each ASOHNS ASM, we endeavour to have a historical section where abstracts can be submitted with the best abstracts chosen to give a 10-15 minute presentation.
The ASOHNS executive has very generously established a prize for the Best Historical Abstract at the ASM, with a monetary value of $500. Although abstracts are open to all to submit, the prize will be open to trainees only - both accredited and unaccredited.
Details of previously accepted abstracts that have been awarded the prize for each year are published here.
Papers should have a connection to the history of our specialty and as a guide, can broadly cover:
- leading pioneers (Avicenna, Politzer, Lempert, Chevalier Jackson)
- anatomical discoveries (Zenker’s Diverticulum, Eustachian tube)
- famous patients (Kaiser Frederick II, F.D Roosevelt)
- evolution of surgical techniques (laryngectomy, paediatric airway, tonsillectomy)
- miscellaneous (otolaryngology in art, tobacco advertising).
We strongly encourage and will give preference to original research, as well as papers that have a strong Australian connection (covering either post-settlement modern medicine aspects and/or pre-settlement traditional medicine).
If you would like any further information, or would like to get involved in the Historical Section, please contact us - we welcome your feedback and suggestions.
