Surgical Education and Training in Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery
The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (the College) is the principal body accredited by the Australian Medical Council and the Medical Council of New Zealand to provide and manage the education, training (including assessment) and professional development programs for surgeons in Australia and New Zealand. The Specialist Surgical Associations act as agents of the College in the delivery of these programs, the extent of which varies with their level of contracted services. These organisations are consulted by the College on all matters of quality and standards.
The aim of the SET program in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery is to educate, train and produce independent surgical specialists.
Appointment to the program is made on an annual basis. Advancement through the program is dependent on satisfactory progress each year. As it is a national training program Trainees must be prepared to be assigned to a unit anywhere in Australia.
Research During Surgical Education and Training
A pathway exists for combining specialist surgical training with a PhD or MS at an Australian University. This program is conducted over an extended period depending on the research undertaken. Applications for the Surgeon Scientist program can only be made once a place on the specialist surgical training program has been offered.
